The 10 Weirdest Hotels in the World

Weird hotel rooms are one thing but what happens when a hotel owner decides to step outside the box during the architectural phase of development? You end up with a hotel that is definitely a far cry from your standard motel or towering sky rise. You end up with architectural works of art. Some are, albeit, strange works of art but they’re interesting all the same.

10. Ice Hotel – Arctic Circle, Sweden

Near the Arctic Circle in Sweden you’ll find the famous Ice Hotel. The hotel is, for the most part, made of ice but you really don’t have to sleep on a slab of the frozen stuff if you don’t want to. You can either sleep in a “cold” room with reindeer skins on the bed or you can sleep in a “warm” room with start contemporary designs. If you choose the cold room you’ll be greeted in the morning by a delivery of hot lingonberry juice to warm you up – much needed after sleeping in a 5 degree room.

9. Cappadocia Cave Suites – Turkey

The caves used as housing at Cappadocia Cave Suites in Turkey were actually carved during the Byzantine and Hittite eras so you are actually given the opportunity to stay in a very historic site. On the other hand, you won’t have to suffer without modern conveniences as they did thousands of years ago. Your cave/room comes complete with electricity, an espresso machine, and internet access.

8. Costa Rica Tree House Lodge – Costa Rica

Adventurers will love the Costa Rica Tree House Lodge. Set in the Gandoca-Manzanillo refuge you’ll have the opportunity to choose between a smallest eco-lodge imaginable – a bona fide tree house. There are only four houses on this beautiful oceanfront property, surrounded by tropical gardens. While slightly strange in concept, you’ll find the tree house suites here to be incredibly comfortable. If you’d prefer to keep your feet on the ground there are plenty of other hotels in Costa Rica to choose from.

7. Luxor Hotel & Casino – Las Vegas, Nevada

Perhaps you’re concerned about never having the opportunity to travel to Egypt to see the great pyramids. The folks who created the Luxor Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada had other things in mind. They created a hotel in the shape of a pyramid (not nearly as creative an endeavor as it was when the originals were built) and even included a sphinx out front.

6. Starwood Resort – Elciego, Spain

The Starwood Resort in Elciego, Spain was created by the famous architect Frank O. Gehry. He created the outside of this hotel with flowing lines and designs that really have no impact on the inside of the hotel. The flowing ribbon-like designs are beautiful to observe from the outside, though.

5. White Cliffs Underground Hotel- New South Wales

The hotel rooms at the White Cliffs hotel in New South Whales are completely underground. They’ve been carved out of what were once opal mines. When you stay here you’ll have not only an incredible hotel room experience but will have the opportunity to tour the old Australian mines as well.

4. Dog Bark Park Inn – Cottonwood, Idaho

The Dog Bark Park Inn in Cottonwood, Idaho is shaped like – you guessed it – a giant dog. It’s a beagle, to be exact. The hotel really only has one suite, accessible after climbing the deck to the patio affixed to the side of the dog. Kids will enjoy sleeping in the loft inside the beagle’s head!

3. Skye Lighthouse – Scotland

It’s really not too strange to see hotels near lighthouses but we don’t see lighthouses themselves converted into hotels very often. Even still, while not as weird as some of the other hotels, there’s something to be said for waking up on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean.

2. Genting First World Hotel – Kuala Lumpur

The Genting First World Hotel in Kuala Lumpur is very colorful, to say the least. To be honest, at first glance we thought it looked like a child’s crayon box threw up on it, but at least the lines are symmetrical.

1. Underwater Hotel -Istanbul

The underwater hotel in Istanbul won’t be the first of its kind but when it’s completed in 2010 it’ll certainly be unique. The hotel is currently slated to stand (errr, sink) 7 stories into the ocean. We’re not willing to bet this hotel will be finished on schedule so you might want to check into some other fine hotels in Turkey instead.
